“If you can not measure it, it does not exist.”

This quote catches the attention of anyone who lives near the world of metaphor and faith. I share this ‘talk’ knowing that I ask you to sit and listen for a few more minutes than normal. It will be worth the time spent.

The Power of Vulnerability

Brene Brown studies human connection — our ability to empathize, belong, love. In a poignant, funny talk at TEDxHouston, she shares a deep insight from her research, one that sent her on a personal quest to know herself as well as to understand humanity. A talk to share.

  1. Carrie, dear, this is a misquotation from William Thomson, Lord Kelvin (1824-1907). He said, and I quote: “When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it, but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledhe is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind: it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely, in your thoughts, advanced to the stage of science.” This is an exemplar of Victorian arrogance. 1. Thank you, David. The quote was actually taken from her speech. As you may note, she highlights these words clearly within a frame as she introduces herself.

Those Victorians — how long must we endure?! Your insights are always welcome, my friend. Carrie
