How do you bounce back if your spiritual life has been flattened by circumstance? Good question. Part of the answer is how you interpret that verb, bounce. Some of us don’t bounce as well as we once did. We may need to ease back, practicing prayer and meditation, finding solid footing on which we can trust before we stand. So don’t feel hurried: take the time you need to find your balance.
Steven Charleston
I woke up Sunday morning relieved that I could actually say ‘all of “that“ happened last week.’
The road to elections and the steps taken after have been demanding and, at moments, overwhelming. This is true wherever you found yourself on the election spectrum.
It has been a challenge for me to write. That’s not to say my mind and heart have not been busy with all kinds of ‘word salads.’ But the energy to create sentences and even focus has been lacking.
When I am living through a time charged with social justice concerns and calls for immediate action, I confess that my spiritual life and practice can get shuffled. I pray on the run, trusting that God understands and sees the urgency of my work.
I’m grateful for Steven Charleston's words. They offer some comfort to the bewildered and exhausted. There is truly a need to rest, recharge, and regroup.
For me, this includes making time to read, journal, and spend a few minutes in silence. I don’t try to put a lot of pressure on myself - a few minutes of silence is sometimes all I can take when life‘s noise has been so loud. But during this time, my intent is to reclaim balance, knowing that there is work ahead.
Where are you after this first week, post-election? What has helped you to find balance?
I invite you to share. Hearing from one another offers encouragement and support.
