Flight into Egypt
An epiphany revealed
I have shared this reflection more than once. Each time I post it, I make changes.
This year, I'm aware of the growing number of refugees worldwide. From war beyond comprehension to weather changes, there are many reasons for these displacements. My heart feels heavy knowing that every life matters and solutions must be found.
Let us pray for epiphanies filled with peace and safety.
So much has happened - it feels like the first “yes” was years ago.
The angels visited in daylight and in dreams. Learning that the young woman was pregnant, her betrothed resolved to remain by her side. From the start, they knew this would be a challenge. Right away, they were required to travel a distance too long to comprehend; they entered Jerusalem with countless others to be registered in a census dictated by foreign leaders.
The birth took place in a simple stable, and there they became a family. A newborn baby who was already filled with history and wisdom. He was their first, and yet both mother and father understood that this child was destined to move beyond them - destined to make sacred imprints on all creation.
That first “yes” continued to reveal its meaning; this epiphany was unfolding.
Visitors entered the small stable - strangers coming to give thanks for this holy baby. These visitors were awed by his presence, their spirits swelling with gratitude and hope. They entered from outside the city, people seen as less worthy by society’s standards. They were shepherds by trade with a willingness to believe in miracles.
Others entered the small stable from lands far away, following the sky’s direction as their own beliefs revealed. Wise and holy, they brought gifts that told the story of things to come. This Baby was born with purpose and compassion, and he would grow willing to offer his all to save a broken world.
Another dream and an angel’s visit raised concern and called for action. Danger surrounded them. This baby’s life was already at risk. The ruling King heard of the birth and understood that the child's arrival brought claims greater than those who sat on earthly thrones.
This epiphany continued to unfold.
It was time for another “yes.” This action required a trust unbound. With family gathered, another move began. A move even more challenging to comprehend. They left their country and walked toward Egypt.
It was a season of “yes”. Each one brought a challenge and a call to obedience. The painting by Luc Olivier Merson reveals a deep human need. This holy family was exhausted and displaced. They find rest in the arms of Egypt’s strength.
Look closely. Does this picture ring familiar?
We might look for a resemblance to our own faith journeys. You know, the ones filled with personal moments of yes. Journeys that require a willingness to take risks beyond our own circle of comfort.
To spread God’s good news opens us to places unfamiliar and moments of epiphany. May we be willing to carry that news of light and promise.
