Supermoon - Harvest Moon
Ask any of my friends, and they will tell you, I am all about the moon! One of my favorite stages is the sliver moon – the one you can barely see in the sky—a whisper of a moon on the rise.
But I can’t resist full moons - majestic and impossible to ignore.
This year's October moon is the ‘supermoon’ - the closest moon's orbit to Earth this year (Oct. 17) and will appear huge and bright in the night sky. A supermoon occurs when the moon is fully illuminated and near its closest point (perigee) in its orbit around the Earth. Not only do we see the October moon as a supermoon, but it is also known as the Harvest Moon. The farmers’ almanac describes it as the moon that draws everyone to the fields and woods – bringing in the harvest and searching for animals to supply the winter’s meat.
It won't be too late to see this moon. As you look at the sky, imagine how many others will do the same. This opportunity will ripple across the country from the East Coast to the West. Take the time, if you can.
