The peace of the morning stillness, the peace of new beginnings, the peace of heaven’s kiss, to welcome us to this day.
Each day we open our eyes to a choice. Do we begin the day with gratitude or anxiety?
Morning’s light is a gift. Without any help from us this light appears. We awaken to its presence and feel its call to stir.
We open our eyes to a choice. A choice on how we meet the challenges a new day can bring. There is no doubt that some days begin with sadness or fear or discomfort. These are real and never to be overlooked. Each morning I wake to my dependence on personal assistance and my need for a wheelchair to get around in this world. Recently I’ve been waking to the fact that I do not move around as easily as I once did – that I run out of energy sooner than before. Frustration can easily be near. But to let frustration begin the day can make me feel closed off, quick to live in my anxiety. Instead I try for a simple “thank you”. Nothing long or fancy but a grateful recognition that a new day is beginning.
To seek a moment of morning’s peace is a good way to start each day whatever we are facing. To speak a word of gratitude, whether or not we feel it, places that word as a reminder throughout the day.

It was not the best of years, the one that steps now into memory,
but we can leave that in the care of the ancestors, to sort out and to put right,
while we walk on to see what tomorrow brings, a new chance to use what we have learned.
May you find what you seek. May your healing be complete.
May you change your direction. May you discover your place to be.
Time is only a line drawn in sand. Life is a spirit flying in starlight.
When you cross from one to the other, do not look back,
but fix your heart on the light you see, rising to meet you on a familiar horizon.

The World I Live In by Mary Oliver
“I have refused to live
locked in the orderly house of
reasons and proofs.
The world I live in and believe in
Is wider than that.
And anyway, what’s wrong with Maybe?
You wouldn’t believe what once or
twice I have seen.
I’ll just tell you this:
only if there are angels in your head will you ever,
possibly, see one.”
Your ability to see beauty and possibility is proportionate to the level at which you embrace gratitude.
We are at another moment of transition. As 2016 comes to a close we stand at the edge of a new year with hesitant anticipation.
Looking back we see turbulence and confusion. 2016 was such a year. Emotions have been raw and undisciplined. Fear returned as our basic understanding of civility has been challenged.
As we prepare to step into a new year- we make choices. There may be hurdles that will best be faced together. We will see possibilities and beauty in places unseen to us before.
Even in the most challenging moments may we remember to nurture gratitude. Nurture it in our selves and share with one another. To be grateful can change a perspective and maybe even redirect a misguided journey.
Blessings as we welcome this new year…
