A New Day…

These words are refreshing and encouraging. When I was young we had something called a ‘do-over’. If – as young children – we had made a poor decision or had a bad attitude we were given the chance to make it right.

Buddha speaks of each day as a ‘do-over’ –  we awaken each morning to greet a fresh start. Oh yes, the challenges and accomplishments from the previous day are with us but the sunrise welcomes a rebirth a new perspective. Before us is offered the invitation to change attitude and direction, to soften anger and practice compassion.

The path in Buddhist tradition is to live life awake to the present moment, knowing that the past cannot be re-lived and the future is always a breath away. Our actions and attitudes today are most important. Other faith traditions share the same wisdom – throughout his ministry, Jesus was often reflecting on being mindful of today not worrying about what tomorrow would bring.

No one says this is easy or always possible yet considering the idea of being ‘reborn’  each day can fill life with possibilities and fresh perspectives.  What will happen? Maybe lighten a load or fill an empty heart with gratitude. At its core may this teaching from Buddha plant a seed of grace and contentment – today.

Carrying Memories and Moving Forward

It has been more than a month since Lilly moved to her new home. The ache within does not grab with the strength of the early days. I am told great stories. She is running with new four-legged friends. She is sharing her abundant love and care with her companions (the two legged type). Last week I received wonderful pictures of a recent camping trip where Lils actually got her feet wet! She is happy and I am grateful.
Time – the one thing in life that nudges us along when we have little energy to move on our own. Forward – the only way to go without creating unduly and unhealthy resistance. Breath – the one gift that sustains and fills us with the mystery of our Great Creator.
I am thankful for all of these ‘gifts’. Gifts that continue to support me as I live into one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. In a way unforeseen, Lilly and I did what we have always done. We took care of one another. As she delights in her newfound friends and freedom, I am happy and able to go greet each day with my own re-discovered freedom. I can make plans and not be concerned. Lilly is not stressing over my needs ( her responsibility for so long). And I am free to move about with complete focus on all the fun and demanding details of living into a new home and make new friends.
We took care of one another. How I love the irony of life!20120603-011119.jpg

A Great Idea for Creative Bonding

So the summer officially begins this weekend. For all the miles driven during the school year there is equal time trying to keep peace and ‘enjoy’ the (somewhat) forced time together. Now the summer will bring more hours and more demand for creative activities as the roads lay before you.

Many of us have memories of singing as we rode with our families on our story-filled summer vacations. I share with you a great example of the fun that can be shared as these memories are created… Happy Summer!!
